This report presents the combined results of the Digital Forensics Survey conducted by Belkasoft in 2020. Feedback from 300+ digital forensics investigators whom we surveyed helped us identify the latest trends around challenges, events, lifestyle, and many other exciting facets of the digital forensics community.
Key Takeaways
- Working from home is both the main challenge—and the main benefit in 2020.
- Much more computer crimes, lack of resources on one side—and not enough budget on another side. Well, at least there is no time to get bored!
- Unemployment is still an issue for some respondents, but is nearly as significant as in many other industries.
- We all lack face-to-face communication and networking opportunities.
- Most of our respondents used to attend conferences 3 or more times a year. Although most of the offline events have been cancelled or moved to online format in 2020, survey participants keep a positive attitude and believe they could access more or less the same content or even have more opportunities than before.
The sum of all replies is greater than 100% thanks to the option to select multiple replies.

Key Takeaways
- 75% of the respondents are early birds and start their working day before 9 am. And most of them are self-disciplined enough to wake up with the first alarm or do without an alarm at all.
- The main hobby is, of course, digital forensics. However almost the same number of people spend their free time with their families. The list of hobbies is diverse and inspiring: dancing tango and woodworking, Scuba diving and sewing, stretching and drone piloting—just to name a few. We are impressed.
- Beer is #1 alcoholic beverage and coffee is the #1 non-alcoholic one. However, the second largest groups in both sections practice a healthy lifestyle—do not drink alcohol and prefer still water.
- The most popular type of vacation is chilling on a beach (which is not surprising, after the hectic working days). However, many respondents prefer active ways to spend their vacation time, hiking, exploring art and culture and skiing.
- Absolute majority of respondents contribute to charity, regularly or from time to time.
- Thanks to everybody who helps to make this world a better place, in everything they do!
